Left to Their Own Devices

This is the illustration that started it all, so it's a sentimental favorite.

My husband and I were at a family party and enjoying some grown up conversation for a change, when we realized neither of us had the children in sight. When we wandered to look for them, we were amused to find them all quietly in the family room, enjoying screen timecontent and occupied. A new take on left to their own devices, we joked. "You should draw this," he encouraged.

I had been dreaming of getting back to drawing for a many years. After some opportunities at work had me learning illustrator, I committed to trying.

I'm not exaggerating, that this little one took me literally months to finish. But the process was so fun, and the outcome so precious, that our idea for a book called Left to Their Own Devices was born. But did I mention, I'm slow? Two years later, I still don't have enough comics to fill a book yet, but twelve is enough for a calendar. So here we are. I'm still going, and getting faster and better no doubt.

I know I need to pick up the pace, however, because my youngest daughter pointed the girl with pigtails, and asked me, "Who is that?" When I told her it was her, she asked me why she looked so young. "It's been two years, dear."

Dolly Data

It's happened a few times now, that on our way to a family vacation to Vermont, that the dreaded text is delivered. The warning that 75% of our data plan has been used even though we're only a one week through the billing cycle and two hours into our 6 hour drive.

My husband can't check the allocation of which device used what from the car, so the adorable "it wsn't me" explanations pour in as each child contemplates the remaining 4 hour drive if their device is confiscated.

Hence our fifth child, Little Ms. Dolly Data was born.
